An Appeal to Mulund Medicos

Dear Doctor,

We are sure that you are aware of the fact that the Government of India has recently adapted a new "National Blood Policy". This policy aims at bringing welcome changes in the scenario of blood transfusions in our country.

Professional blood donors have already been banned since January 1998. The new policy also intends to get rid of the practice of providing "replacement blood donors" by the patients’ relatives/friends who use the facility of the blood bank. This is because in many blood banks "paid blood donors" are still used after labelling their status as "replacement blood donors".

We, at Pooja Blood Bank, have never accepted any "paid blood donations". At the same time, in view of the forthcoming changes, we are thriving to prepare a list of "voluntary blood donors" who are residing in the vicinity of our blood bank. We have recently conducted three major "drives" to enrol voluntary blood donors by carrying out "Blood Grouping and Rh Typing" FREE OF COST for the prospective blood donors. We are happy to inform you that, as of date, we have more than two thousand voluntary blood donors on our list. [The list is available on our website: www.poojabloodbank.com] We shall greatly appreciate active co-operation from the entire medical fraternity in enlarging this list at least fourfold.

We seek your help in mobilising more healthy people to donate blood. Donor motivation coming from a doctor treating a patient has a greater impact on the patient’s relatives/friends than the motivation undertaken by the blood bank personnel.

We highly appreciate your contribution in sending replacement blood donors whenever your patients have used blood or blood components. Presently we offer the following service: (1) Cross matching and reservation of blood/components for anticipated needs; (2) Issuing the reserved units as and when needed; and (3) Replacing used units by sending replacement blood donors. However, this practice CAN NOT GO ON IF BLOOD STOCKS IN THE BLOOD BANKS RUN DRY. It will help us immensely if you tell your patient: "Send one blood donor to the blood bank. You may require blood anytime during your stay in the hospital."

It is imperative that people come forward and donate blood even when they have not used any of our stocks. [Incidentally, Pooja Blood Bank has attractive terms for voluntary blood donors, such as "blood assurance for four persons for one year" against one blood donation". We have recently introduced a new "Group Policy for Your Needs in Blood or Blood Components" for groups of blood donors numbering more than fifty.]

We, hereby, appeal to the medical fraternity in Mulund to extend their co-operation in our effort to make Mulund the first place in India to effectively implement the new National Blood Policy.

Gratefully your,

For Pooja Blood Bank

Dr. Mrs. Madhuri Chitre
