METHOD OF PHLEBOTOMY

Take the previously selected and properly numbered blood bag. Recheck the donor identity and the given serial number.
Uncover the sterile needle of the collection bag and perform phlebotomy immediately using proper aseptic technique.
Ask the donor to open and close his hand after giving him rubber ball or a similar item provided for this purpose.
The donor should be under constant observation during blood collection and should never be left unattended.
Place the bag on the weighing machine and mix the blood and the anticoagulant solution periodically.
Note the weight of the collection bag (without satellite bags in case of double or triple bags). Add 370 gms to this to determine the total weight of the bag after blood collection. The blood bag will contain 350 ml of blood at this weight.
Note the time of phlebotomy on the donor form in the space provided for it.
Note the weight of the collection bag to see when it reaches the weight for collecting 350 ml blood.
Once enough blood is collected in the bag apply an artery forcep to collecting tube of the set.
Release pressure of the B.P. instrument.
Remove needle from the vein, put a sterile cotton swab with alcohol at the site and ask the donor to fold the arm at elbow to create pressure at the site or ask him to hold the swab with his other hand and apply pressure. Do not allow the donor to sit up or stand immediately.
Take the bag and pilot tubes to another table.
Release the artery forcep and allow blood from the tubing to drain into one of the numbered pilot tubes.
Clamp the tubing after it has emptied, mix the blood and anticoagulant againg by gently agitating the bag for 15 to 20 seconds.
Open the clamp again and allow anti - coagulated blood to run into the second numbered pilot tube.
Seal the tubing at minimum four places by using the tube-sealing machine. Ensure that the tubing contains blood in these sealed parts. Also ensure the each sealed part of the tubing has the serial number printed by the manufacturers.
Refrigerate the bag between 4 and 6 degrees immediately. Do NOT refrigerate if Platelet Concentrate is to be prepared from this unit, but keep at temperature between 20 and 24 degrees (in the 'Platelet Incubator').
Enter the time of completion of blood collection in the space provided on the donor form.
Ask the donor to sit up on the donor bed and if he does not feel giddy in sitting position lead him to the recovery bed, make him sit there and have the refreshments. Ask him to keep his 'donor arm' folded at elbow and holding it high (at or near shoulder level).
Check the phlebotomy site to ensure the there is no bleeding from the venepuncture site. Put a medicated adhesive tape (previously cut to about 1 square centimeter).
Thank the donor for his donation and encourage him to donate again.
