PREPARATION OF PHLEBOTOMY SITE

Select arms for phlebotomy and apply sphygmomanometer cuff well above elbow joint. Select a large & firm cubital vein. [Increase the pressure in the cuff to slightly less than the donor's diastolic pressure(50 to 70 mm of Hg). and ask the donor to make a fist to facilitate filling of the veins.]

Clean the skin over the vein by starting in the center and moving in concentric spirals covering an area of about 4 to 5 cms with 15 % Cetavlon or Savlon solution, dry with a cotton swab.

Apply Betadine solution in the same manner over the selected area.

Sterilize by applying 70 % ethyl alcohol or 70 % isopropyl alcohol. Do not touch the site after sterilizing. Increase pressure in B.P. instrument to about
50 to 70 mm of Hg.
