AGE:
Between 18 and 60 years
(Note: Healthy, grown teenagers often volunteer. Their consent for blood donation is not legally valid unless their parents/guardians countersign the donor form. They may be considered for blood donation at the discretion of the attending medical officer (M.O.). (Persons above sixty years of age who are in good health may be considered for blood donations at the discretion of the M.O.) (Patients for Autologous Transfusions may be beyond these age limits). |

BODY
WEIGHT: Must be above 45 Kg. (for donating 350 ml of blood)
Must be above 50 Kg if 450 ml blood is to be drawn. |

|
|
HAEMOGLOBIN
: Must be more than 12.5 Gm.% (as
determined by "sinking" of a drop of peripheral blood in a solution of
Copper Sulphate of the Specific Gravity of 1.053)
(Note: This criteria may be relaxed for patients for Autologous Transfusions). |

|
|
BLOOD PRESSURE : (Measured at brachial artery) Systolic, not more than 150 mm of Hg and not less than 110 mm of Hg; Diastolic, not more than 100 mg of Hg and not less than 70 mm of Hg. | |
|
|
RADIAL PULSE : Must not have any irregularity. Volume should be good. Rate should be between 60 and 90 beats per minute. | |
|
|
TEMPERATURE
: Should
be between 36.5 to 37.5 degrees Celsius.
(Unusually cold or warm skin should be reported to the M.O.). |
|
|
|
RESPIRATION : Should not be more than 24 per minute. | |
|
|
GENERAL
CONDITION : The donor should appear healthy. He/she should not
be on empty stomach. Do not take blood within 1 hour after the last meal
(30 minutes in case of light snacks).
The donor should have had proper rest during the past 24 hours before blood donation. Enquiries about the prospective blood donor's last visit to his/her family physician and the reason for it should be made. |
